History of Camp
Southside Sertoman, Kent Ahrens is credited with starting the camp on the inspiration of a deaf nephew who was unable to participate in other youth camps. Members said the camp began as a simple one-day program at Missouri Western State College.
Every March, Southside Sertoma holds a barbecue and a golf tournament later in the year.
The Sertoma Club of St. Joseph decided to help in sponsoring the camp. Every September they hold a Sporting Clays Event as a fundraiser for the camp.
The Sertoma Clubs of St Joseph Deaf Camp have been funding a summer camp experience for hearing impaired children between ages 7 and 14. Our camp gives these special children a lifetime of memories they might not otherwise experience. The camp hosts 60 to 80 children for one week each summer and is held at Camp Marvin Hillyard, which is located just south of St Joseph, MO. The cost of the camp runs in excess of $28,000 per year.
We are 501(c)3 organization.
